Losing Medical Record Job Due to Electronic Transition?

by Electronic Medical Records Software on September 12, 2011

I use to work for the hospital as a medical transcriptionist but I always thought about the medical records field. I sat in for an employee meeting and they said they are making the transition to electronic medical records in about 5 years. Would that change the job of a medical biller/coder? Would there be not a big need for that career?

I suspect that medical billers and coders will continue to be needed. Although changes are continuing that billing will be done more electronically, staffing will continue to be needed.

Medical Transcriptionists is a different story. With the transition to electronic medical records and improvements in voice recognition technology, medical transcriptionists will become a thing of the past.

What state do you live in? I hope thats not true cause I am taking classes right now (3 different courses) Medical Transcription, medical claims and billing, medical and dental assistant. I hope that the jobs are still in demand cause I don’t wait to waste money and time on this job and well in 5 years the jobs be history.

Yes, to a certain extent. The computer will do the coding & an experienced C & B will audit them. Obviously, there will be a need for fewer B & Coders. ANd its just not 5 years down the road, for many the transition has already taken place. My clinic uses no paper at all.
